  1. WestQuay - Southampton (UK) - February 10 - An enclosed mall in this historic port city on the southern coast of the British Isle. The mall has 90 stores including John Lewis, Benetton, Marks & Spencer and H &M, and is just a short walk from the Cunard Line docks where the Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II luxury liners are home-ported. Mall offers two-level spaces, and the Apple construction barricade covers a lower and upper-level space. Appeared as a job location on Feb. 2, 2006. Job listings appeared June 20, 2006. Was scheduled before year's end, but now said to be second or third Saturday of Feb. 2007. Features V2.0 interior. [construction barricade photo]
  2. Kahala Mall - Honolulu (HI) - February 10 - A second-tier mall with 418,000 s.f. and 90 stores, just 4 miles from the existing Ala Moana Mall store, and 3 miles south of Waikiki Beach. Anchored by Macy's, Barnes & Noble. A newspaper story in early May 2006 said Apple was negotiating for a space, and that deal was later signed. In late July job listings appeared on Monster.com. Reportedly a Thanksgiving 2006 weekend grand opening. However on Feb. 3, 2007 Apple announced a Feb. 10th grand opening, the first openingi in 3 months. Features V2.0 interior.   3. Bentall Centre - Kingston (UK) - February 17 - The second store in the city, it's located in a town that's part of the Greater London Authority, 12 miles southwest of downtown, with 85 shops, with 340,000 s.f. of retail space. The store has a spectacular 4-story atrium with a long glass dome made in Germany. The Centre links to the 200,000 s.f. Bentalls department store, and has a large auto parking structure.   4. Coconut Point - Bonita Springs, FL - February 24 - A new Main Street outdoor mall, residential and office development along Hwy. 41 on the western shop of the state's southern tip, 10 miles north of the future Waterside Shops store in Naples. It includes a community center, 305 condos, 1.2 million s.f. of retail space, lakes, boardwalk, 127-room hotel, and restaurants on 120 acres. Opens Nov. 10, 2006. Appeared as a job location on May 11, 2006. On Feb. 19th Apple announced a February 24, 2007 grand opening. Features V2.0 interior. [grand opening]
  5. The Domain - Austin, TX - March 10 - A new outdoor Main Street-type mall north of city center scheduled to open Phase I in March 2007, and Phase II in 2008, with eventually 1 million square feet of stores and restaurants. The mall is part of a huge office, retail, residential complex planned for the site. The fast-growing region is home to high-tech companies an several universities. The mall itself is among an IBM office complex. Appeared as job location Oct. 18, 2006. On March 5th Apple announced a March 9th grand opening, and it will feature the V2.0 interior design with iMac-equipped training area. Soft-opened on March 8th.   6. Waterside Shops - Naples, FL - March 10 - An impressive mall with just 48 stores operated by Forbers Co., with waterfalls, bridges and waterway on the south end of the state. It underwent an expansion to 100,000 s.f. for a total of 362,000 s.f., with Saks Fifth Avenue opening in 2008. Appeared as a job location on April 19, 2006 and was set for late 2006 grand opening. However, Steve Jobs reportedly visited the mall and included the store among those to have the V2.0 interior design, delaying the opening. On March 5th Apple announced a March 10th grand opening.   7. Roma Est (Rome, Italy) - March 31 - In Sept. 2005 sources said Apple would open its first continental Europe store in this city during 2006 at an unknown location, and this new mall under construction in Rome's eastern suburbs was identified shortly after. Apple posted an Italian recruiting page on Nov. 24, 2005. In March 2006 sources confirmed the grand opening had been pushed back from June to Thursday, September. 14 2006.   8. The Summit - Birmingham, AL - April 14 - This city was an very early choice for a store, sources say. It was assigned project #005 in 2001 and interviews were even held as part of the personnel hiring process. Apple approached The Summit (Bayer Properties, 846,000 s.f., 25 stores, 8 restaurants) outdoor shopping mall along I-459, but Bayer was reportedly reluctant to allow a computer store into the upscale mall, and the available space was six inches too small [news article]. In 2005 the project number was reassigned to Nagoya (Japan). Then in Jan. 2006 sources said Apple had re-approached the mall with a lease request, coincident with a mall expansion to 1 million square-feet. In early Sept. 2006 a newspaper confirmed Apple was in final negotiations with the mall for the former Eddie Bauer space (#28, 6,500 s.f.). It's the first store in the state.   9. Park Meadows Mall - Lone Tree, CO - April 21 - Built in 1996 and operated by General Growth, it has 160 shops and restaurants in this southern Denver suburb. It has 1.6 million square-feet indoors, and another 154,000 s.f. is being added outdoors with Main Street shops and restaurants, a fountain and native plants to open by 2008. Anchored by Nordstrom, Dillard's and Macy's. Appeared as a store location on Oct. 19, 2006.
  10. The Galleria- Fort Lauderdale, FL - April 21 - A 2-story super-regional mall with 1 million s.f. that was built in 1980, then renovated and expanded in 2004. It's anchored by Macy's, Dillard's and Saks Fifth Avenue. In Feb. 8, 2007 a sign appeared in space E-12 at the Galleria Mall, next to Williams-Sonoma, saying it was the site of a future Apple store.   11. Baybrook Mall - Friendswood, TX - May 12 - Located 10 miles southeast of downtown along I-45. Renovated in 2004 with 1.1 million s.f., and anchored by Dillard's, Mervyn's, Sears, Macy's. It serves the city, including the University of Texas Medical School, NASA, ARCO, Philips Chemical, The Boeing Company, Lockheed Ma rtin, Exxon Mobil, University of Houston-Clear Lake. Possibly space #1364 near Dillards. Job listings appeared Dec. 12, 2006.
  12. Fashion Fair - Fresno, CA - June 9 - A 1970s-vintage mall in the agricultural central valley of the state, it had a $10 million remodel in 2003. An 87,000 square-foot expansion opened in Dec. 2006 to total 140 stores. It has 961,000 s.f. anchored by Gottschalks, JC Penny and Macy's. Possibly 6,563 s.f. space E08 vacated by Victoria's Secret.   13. San Luis Obispo - CA - June 9 - In early May 2006 Apple submitted a design review application to the city's Cultural Heritage Committee for storefront changes to 899 Higuera Street, part of a paseo-type mall in the city's Downtown Historic District, and part of the Downtown Centre. The city is home to 45,000 residents and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, is along the state's central coast, and is celebrating its 150th birthday. As of early July, the city and Apple's architect are negotiating design changes. Appeared as job location on July 14, 2006. In early August Apple asked for two delays for city architectural review. No action until Nov. 9, 2006 when property owner applied to divide space in two, indicating Apple was no longer the tenant. On Jan. 30, 2007 a newspaper article says Apple has received approval for the store after the company submitted revised plans earlier in the month. The store is on-track for a summer grand opening. In fact, the date "June 9th" appeared on the barricade in late March.   14. Woodland Hills - Tulsa, OK - June 29 - The #15 largest metro area without an Apple retail store has a 2-level indoor mall on the city's south side, the state's largest at 1.2 million square-feet. It's operated by Simon Property Group Inc., with 180 stores, including all the usual Apple store neighbors. Apple signed a 12-year lease on a space and separate stockroom. First revealed by tipster Oct. 4, 2004. No construction activity as of Nov. 2006, but construction underway March 2007, stainless steel walls up June 19th.   15. Bayshore Town Center - Glendale, WI - June 29 - A $200 million redevelopment and expansion of the existing 1954-vintage indoor mall along I-43 in a northern suburb of Milwaukee. The construction will create a 400,000 s.f. outdoor, Main Street-style mall, along with offices, townhouses, condos and apartments, restaurants, health club, movie theater, grocery store, comedy club and parking. The mall re-opened Nov. 6, 2006, and Apple will move in some time during 2007. First revealed April 2006. Construction barricade with Apple's logo appeared at space C24 (close to N.   16. West Towne Mall - Madison, WI - July 7 - The capitol city is home to the University of Wisconsin, and a particularly up-scale and tech-savvy population. The 1970s mall was renovated last in 2003, and is located west of downtown. It offers 915,000 s.f. with 110 shops, anchored by JCPenney, Boston Store, Sears and Dick's Sporting Goods.   17. Holyoke Mall at Ingleside - Holyoke, MA - July 21 - Located at the intersection of I-90 and I-91, it draws visitors from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont. It's also tourist country and home to several universities. It's operated by Pyramid Management Gorup, and was expanded in 1995. It has 200+ shops and restaurants over 1.6 million s.f., anchored by JC Penney, Sears and Target, and includes a Best Buy store. Apple has a space on the 2nd level, adjacent to the Coach store, and near the main elevator and Target. In early Sept. the mall Web site said an Apple store is coming "2007."   18. Briarwood Mall - Ann Arbor, MI - July 21 -The city of 115,000 is home to the University of Michigan's 40,000 students. Store to be located in a 982,500 square-foot, super-regional mall operated by the Mills Corp. about 3 miles south of downtown along I-94. The mall was built in 1973, and renovated in 2003. Anchored by Marshall Field's, Sears, JC Penney and Von Maur, with 110+ stores and restaurants. Store space is between Limitd and DOC Eyeworld, and is 4,497 square-feet. Job listings appeared Nov. 22, 2006. Construction barricade up, mall directory lists Apple (with asterisk) and space is empty on May 7, 2007.   19. Orland Park Mall - Orland Park, IL - July 21 - A Simon-operated mall on Chicago's south side, it has 150 stores on two levels in 1.2 million square-feet, anchored by Sears, JC Penney and Marshall Fields (Macys). It boasts that it's the largest and most-upscale mall on the south side, with an annual $400 per square-foot in sales. Appeared as a store location on Oct. 19, 2006. Construction barricade with Apple logo appeared first week of May 2007. Grand opening July 21st.
  20. Buchanan Street - Glasgow, Scotland - August 25 - This city of 629,000 is Britain's second largest shopping district, and is home to 3 major universities and several colleges. The city's demographic is high on younger and educated residents. Stone-paved Buchanan Street is home to many high-end shops and restaurants, and the 80-store Buchanan Galleries mall two blocks north of Apple's store. On Oct. 11, 2006 Apple filed paperwork to renovate the building at 147 Buchanan Street at the corner of St. Vincent St., in the middle of the district. The 3-story bulding was designed by architect David Hamilton in 1841 as the Western Club (although just two walls of the original building remain after earlier retail renovations). It was most recently occupied by The Pier, a family-owned home furnishings store, who moved to a suburban mall after receiving a huge pay-out from Apple. It's considered a Category A historic building that can only be modified with permission. The renovations included removing the mezzanine level, installing a second floor, a spiral glass staircase, stainless steel interior walls, and second-level Genius/Studio bars. The plans don't include a theater, but make use of the basement for storage. Total cost £1,168,000 ($2.2 million). Interior renovations approved by city officials on Jan. 23, 2007. Construction started in February, 2007, with a grand opening in August, 2007. It's the first store in Scotland, and geographically the furthest-north store in the chain.   21. Oxmoor Center - Louisville, KY - Sept. 6 - A General Growth Properties Inc. mall located on the I-264 loop just east of downtown. It has 110 shops in 960,000 square-feet, anchored by Macy's, Von Maur and Sears. The store would fill in some part of the black-out space in the central U.S. and would be the first Apple store in the state. In late Feb. 2007 tipsters confirmed the store in an unknown space, but a later newspaper story said it's the 5,000 s.f. former Kirkland's Home space, across from Eddie Bauer in the Macy's wing. The building permit quoted the refit costs at $1.7 million (not including mechanical, electrical or plumbing), with another $215,000 of related costs. As of July 1st the stainless steel façade is installed and interior party finished. Job listings posted March 1, 2007.   22. Los Gatos - N. Calif. - Sept. 6 - In mid-2006 Apple submitted design proposals to build a 5,356 s.f. store at 23-25 N. Santa Cruz Ave. in this upscale suburb of San Jose. The city has a "formula" retail store zoning ordinance, which generally restricts chain store development in the downtown district. In early Nov. 2006 Apple withdrew its proposal, and city officials said they plan to re-submit them later. Apparently the plans were approved, because job listings were posted March 1, 2007.   23. Natick Collection Mall - Natick, MA - Sept. 7 - The Boston suburb store is about 12 miles west from the future downtown store on Boylston Street (Boston), and near Wellesley College.The mall will will open a 500,000 s.f. addition in Sept. 2007, creating a two-level, super-regional mall anchored by Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, creating a mall with 167 stores in 1.1 million square feet. On May 7, 2007 Apple signed a lease for 5,072 s.f. space in the Main St.-style addition, on the "back" side. Grand opening Sept. 7th at 10 a.m. [opening photos]
  24. Deer Park Town Center - Chicago, IL - Sept. 15 - In an affluent northwest Chicago suburb, this outdoor lifestyle center has 65 stores, 12 restaurants and a 16-screen cinema, anchored by Crate & Barrel, several Gap stores and Barnes & Noble. The center is a relatively small 386,000 s.f., but will be expanded by 80,000 s.f. within two years. Job listing appeared March 19, 2007. [building permit] [opening photos]
  25. Touchwood Mall - Solihull, UK - Sept. 22 -Located just 8 miles southeast of the existing Bull Ring store, this mall opened in 2001, and has 540,000 square-feet of space, 80 shops, 24 cafes, bars and restaurants, along with a 19-screen cinema. Job listing posted March 22, 2007.
  26. Mall of Georgia - Buford, GA - Sept. 22 - About 40 miles northeast of Atlanta along I-85, this 1.7 million square-foot mall in anchored by Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's and Nordstrom. Apple occupy a space near Nordstrom formerly occupied by Potter Barn Kids. Black construction barricade up early Oct. 2006.   27. Lehigh Valley Mall - Whitehall, PA - Sept. 29 - A 2-story enclosed mall managed by Simon Company just north of Allentown, it's undergoing expansion from 130 stores an 1 million s.f., anchored by Macy's and JC Penney. Two tipsters said in Feb. 2007 that Apple would locate there, but mall management denied that. Job listings posted mid-May 2007. Grand opening Sept. 29, 2007. [grand opening photos #1 /] #2]
  28. Mall at Partridge Creek - Oct. 18 - Clinton Township, MI - A new mall operated by Taubman under construction in northeast suburban Detroit. Will have 640,000 s.f. and 90 stores and restaurants, anchored by Nordstrom, Parisian and a multi-screen cinema. Taubman announced Apple as a future tenant on April 19, 2006, and the mall's Web site also listed Apple. Mall opens Oct. 18th, and Apple store will hold its grand opening the same day. [mall plan]
  29. Lakeside Shopping Centre - West Thurrock (UK) - Oct. 20 - A 3-level indoor mall about 25 miles east of central London (just beyond the metro border), with 300 retailers, restaurants and cafés, anchored by House of Fraser, Debenhams, Primark and M&S. At 1.3 million s.f., it's one of the largest malls in Europe. Apple will occupy 5,000 in a space relinquished by Woolworths, on the second level next to Carphone Warehouse.   30. SanTan Village - Gilbert, AZ - Oct. 26 - A new super-regional urban complex in a Phoenix suburb covering 500 acres, intended to create a live-work-shop environment, with a shopping mall, offices, 18-screen theater, restaurants and residential space. It's operated by Macerich Corp. and its 1.2 million s.f. of retail is anchored by Dillard's and Macy's. Appeared as a job location April 26, 2007. The mall opens Oct. 26, 2007, and Apple is scheduled to open the same day--and the same day as the Leopard OS X release. It will be store #200. updated
  31. Town Square - Las Vegas, NV - Nov. 14 - A huge, 1.5 million square-foot, $600 million "super-regional," open-air lifestyle center at the intersection of I-15 and I-215 south of the Strip. Construction began in May 2005 and was scheduled for a mid-2007 grand opening. It will include 150 shops, 12 dining establishments, a 230-room boutique hotel, office space, outdoor concert venue, multi-screen cinema on 120 acres. It's all designed as a city, with parks, streets and intersections, and varying architecture. Developer announced Apple store on Jan. 15, 2006. Grand opening Wed., Nov. 14th. [rendering] [story]
  32. Chestnut Street - San Francisco, CA - Nov. 23 - The city is composed of many small neighborhoods outside the downtown area. This quiet street is in the Marina District, within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge. The old-time neighborhood Marina Theater is being renovated into a theater/retail combination, and the existing Walgreens drug store at 2125 Chestnut St. will move into the ground-floor space, freeing up the smallish (2,000 s.f., but parcel is up to 4,750 s.f.) space for Apple. Merchants support Apple's plans, but neighbors filed their opposition, claiming the building's tiles are historical. In mid-July 2007 the interior was gutted and the roof removed.   33. Princesshay Development - Exeter (UK) - Nov. 24 - A 23-acre, city-centre development that includes retail, apartment, office, restaurant, car park, pedestrian mall and open space, anchored by Debenhams. The development is being opened in phases, and will be fully open by Christmas 2007. Appeared as a job location on May 4, 2007. Grant opening Nov. 24th.   34. West 14th Street - New York City, NY - Dec. 7 - During the second-quarter financial conference call on April 25, 2007, CFO Peter Oppenheimer said Apple would open the third New York City store at 14th Street and 9th Avenue in the city's Meatpacking District. Identified as 401 W. 14th St., taking 30,258 s.f. of retail space (4,883 on the ground floor, and 7,912 on the second floor, 17,463 on the third floor; plus 4,719 in the basement) of the building owned by R.K. Futterman. Apple will occupy the corner space, with a 45-foot storefront on 14th St., and 108-foot side frontage. It was previously occupied by Western Beef, but they were forced out by the owners in 2005. The entire building is being renovated for $10 million. Grand opening December 7th. Apple's neighbors to the west are Italian fashion designer Moschino and clothier Hugo Boss.
