One Stockton Update
February 20, 2004

The scaffolding is down, the pedestrian walkway has been removed, and the construction crane has been taken away. I assume that interior work on the building is continuing at a rapid pace, but it's not visible from the outside, since the Stockton St. windows are covered.

Outside the building, work is focused on the installation of the stone siding, and the two sidwalk areas. The very first stone slab was hoisted into place today--one slab on the Stockton St. side between the front windows and the BART entrance. There will be also be stone siding inside the BART escalator area, and on the Ellis St. side of the building.

A brand-new cement curb has been laid on the Stockton St. side, and workers were busy on the sidewalk foundation on that side. A representative of the San Francisco Fire Department, which also handles the city's fire hydrant system, was there to consult on the hydrant that will be on the corner. The sidewalk on the Ellis St. side is still covered with construction materials, and probably won't be re-laid with new cement until late next week.

The BART entrance itself is still very much under construction. You can now tell that the escalator and stairway entrance has a glass window to the outside, and a glass window to the inside of the Apple store.

There is a short, but fairly long horizontal window on the Ellis St. side of the building, but it's not clear if the window will have a view of the inside, or just be a display window, similar to the Burlingame and Ginza stores.

I could see two white Apple logos on the Stockton St. front windows, on either side of the front entrance. It's not clear if they've been etched, painted or just taped to the windows.

The building immediately west of the Apple store on Ellis St. was demolished some time prior to the start of the store's construction. However, the front of the building is still standing, and presents an enormous eyesore--especially when compared to the stainless steel of the Apple store. Given Apple's attention to detail, I expect the left-over facade will not look the same on grand opening day!
