| A view of the Shibuya (Tokyo) Apple store spiral glass staircase, with an accompanying security guard.
These stairs are constructed entirely unlike the spiral stairs at Shinsaibashi, which are free-standing and suppoted by steel rods from the ceiling. These stairs and handrail are supported on the left side by the adjacent wall. On the right side, the stairs and handrail are supported by four solid glass panels , which also provide protection from children from falling through the space between the treads and handrail. The glass panels, in turn, are supported by the stainless steel handrail. The panels are composed of three pieces of glass laminated together. There are small lights mounted in the stone under the stairs, shining upwards. The surrounding walls are bead-blasted stainless steel. The stone steps and "stage" to the right are made of the same materials as the store's flooring. |
